Things for Elderly To Do in Pocatello

As you age, you may wonder what activities you can still do in your town that may have changed a lot from when you were younger. Maybe you’re also in a completely different place. Pocatello is a great place with many things the elderly can do. Pocatello is a city in East Idaho that has a small-town feel but is bigger than surrounding towns such as Downey and Blackfoot. The population is around 25,000 and about 15% account for the senior population.

As a senior, either living at home or in an assisted living home, it can be hard to prioritize getting outside and spending time doing activities in your community. At The Gables, we want to help you get out and do these things to improve your overall well-being and nurture your relationships. This guide will outline all the places to go and things to do in Pocatello.

1. Old Town Pocatello

Seniors can take a walk down the historic main street to shop or just look around. There are lots of antique shops, clothing boutiques, coffee shops, and restaurants to visit and experience. Lookout Point, which opened not too long ago, is a great outdoor space in Old Town to host events, such as the local farmer’s market, walk around, and play in the park area.

2. Museums

If you love learning about history and looking at all the artifacts, these two museums are great attractions to see. As a senior, it can be fun to learn about things you may have not known before. Or it is a great way to interact with your kids and grandchildren.

  • Museum of Clean- The Museum of Clean offers a unique experience, unlike most museums. It shows the history of certain cleaning techniques and tools while providing fun things to see for everyone.
  • Idaho Museum of Natural History- This museum is located on the Idaho State University campus and offers cool things to see. If you are into the history of animals and dinosaurs, this museum is a great place to stop by.

3. Ross Park

Ross Park is a wonderful spot for many different activities, especially for those who are older. Spending time outside, no matter what you are doing, is a great way to stay mentally and physically well as you age. Here are some different ways to spend your time at Ross Park:

  • Ross Park Drive Inn: During the summer months, you can enjoy the famous taco spaghetti with your family in the outside seating or have a picnic in the park at one of the benches.
  • Ross Park Aquatic Center: There is something for everyone at this pool. You can sit in a tube and relax in the lazy river or on the recliner chairs. Before the pool officially opens to the public, they will let you walk in the lazy river for exercise.
  • Walking Trails: There are many trails around Ross Park where you can take a nice stroll or jog. It isn’t usually busy so you can enjoy some peace and quiet.
  • Pocatello Zoo: The zoo is located in upper Ross Park. Bring your grandkids to enjoy a day of seeing and interacting with all the animals.

4. Idaho State University

Pocatello is home to the college campus of Idaho State University. There are many activities and amenities that go on there. Of course, there are a lot for students, but there are many for alumni and seniors as well.

  • Reed Gym: Reed Gym offers numerous physical activities to choose from, such as yoga, spinning, tennis, etc. They also have a fully equipped gym where you can work out to whatever capacity you can. Reed Gym hosts games such as volleyball and basketball that you can come to watch if sports are something you enjoy.
  • ICCU Dome: The dome is home to all of ISU’s home football games. Come enjoy the game and some concessions on Saturdays in the fall.
  • Bengal Theater: There is a theater located on campus that puts on showings of movies for a very affordable price. If you want to do something less physically taxing and relax, this is the place to do that.
  • Stephens Performing Arts: Going along with the Bengal Theater, Stephens is a great place to watch a play or orchestra performance to enjoy live music and acting while sitting back and relaxing.

5. Golf

Golf is an amazing way to spend your time, especially when hitting retirement. It is a sport that is less straining on your body, but a great way to stay active and find a hobby you love. There are 3 golf courses in the Pocatello area to choose from.

  • Highland Golf Course: Located right by Highland High School with friendly staff and good food.
  • Riverside Golf Course: A beautiful and not-too-difficult course located on Bannock Highway.
  • Juniper Hills Country Club: Has a large course and an amazing clubhouse. Also located on Bannock Highway, Juniper offers amenities such as a restaurant and a pool.

Or if you prefer just hitting balls or mini golfing instead of a full course, Outback Golf is a great place to do that, with affordable prices and friendly owners.

6. Portneuf Wellness Complex

The Portneuf Wellness Complex is just the place to walk or fish. The large pond is encircled all the way around with a paved path, so you can have a relaxing stroll or day by the water. This facility also includes an amphitheater where there are concerts occasionally. It is not extremely crowded like some concert venues and has comfortable seating so you can enjoy the show in good conditions.
