Assisted Living Moving Checklist

At some point, there is a good chance that you will know a loved one who will move into an assisted living facility. Moving into an assisted living facility is a significant life change for seniors and their families. It can be an overwhelming and stressful time for all of those that are involved.  It’s important to make the transition as smooth as possible for your loved one and help them to feel prepared. It is important to prepare them mentally for the change but also in other ways. One way to prepare is to be sure that they will have everything that they will need when moving into the assisted living facility. In order to make things easier for everyone, we have come up with the following items that may be needed when moving into assisted living.

Furniture and Personal Items

When moving into an assisted living facility, it’s important to bring along familiar items with you. It is encouraged that you bring a few furniture items from your home such as a chair or sofa, dresser, nightstand, and any other smaller furniture that is wanted. For entertainment purposes, it is a good idea to bring a television as well. In order to help make the space feel like your own, bring personal items as well. This may include picture frames that have pictures of family, decorations, and keepsakes.

Clothing and Linens

Another important consideration when moving into an assisted living facility is clothing and linens. Make sure that you bring a wide variety of clothing items that you would want throughout the season changes. Most of the time you will be in the assisted living facility so comedy clothes and pajamas are vital. Bring some nicer items for outings and Sunday services if you choose to attend. Bring bedding and towels as well. Consider packing extra linens to make laundry day easier.

Medications and Medical Supplies

For seniors who take medications or use medical supplies, it’s essential to bring those items along when moving into an assisted living facility. This includes prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, and medical equipment such as walkers or canes. Once moved into the facility, team members can help take care of your medications and ensure that you are taking them as needed.

Important Documents

Make sure to bring along important documents such as a driver’s license, insurance cards, and a list of emergency contacts. Also, consider bringing along legal documents such as a living will or power of attorney. It is important to have all of these documents on hand in case of an emergency or if you want to refer to them during your stay.

Toiletries and Personal Care Items

Toiletries and personal care items such as soap, shampoo, and toothpaste are also essential when moving into an assisted living facility. Dont forget to bring items that you use each day such as make-up, hair products, a comb, and things such as nail clippers. Any items that you use in order to maintain hygiene are needed.  Consider packing enough supplies to last for several weeks or even a month.

Kitchen Supplies and Appliances

If the assisted living facility allows for some cooking or food preparation, consider bringing along kitchen supplies and appliances such as a microwave or toaster oven. Make sure to check with the facility beforehand to see what is allowed and if there is anything that they provide for you. It may be a good idea to have a miniature refrigerator to store things such as milk. Though all of your meals will be cooked for you, you may still want to store some snacks or drinks in your room.

Moving into an assisted living facility can be an overwhelming experience, but with a well-planned move-in checklist, the process can be much smoother. Even if things are forgotten, in most cases there are family members or friends who can help get items that have been forgotten.
